What is Speed in Physics?
Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance.
The formula for speed is:
v = d / t
Where:
v = speed
d = distance travelled
t = time taken
Speed is a scalar quantity, meaning it has only magnitude and no direction. It tells us how fast an object is moving, but not the direction of motion.
Speed can be uniform (constant) or non-uniform (changing). When an object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, it is said to have uniform speed.
The SI unit of speed is metres per second (m/s).
Imagine a car moving along a road 🚗. If it covers more distance in less time, it is moving at a higher speed.
